Chester at the Queen
This tour is a must for all horticulture and history enthusiasts! The county of Cheshire has seen a number of inventions and firsts in its history and retains many of its original features from the red sandstone of its monumental and ecclesiastical buildings to the two-tone timbered buildings that Chester is most famed for.
Cheshire has been shaped by an unusual history relatively untouched by the Industrial Revolution, its parks and gardens flourished as they were reclaimed from workers who fled to more lucrative working towns. Arley Hall is a perfect example of this with its ornate gardens and famed herbaceous borders, it has provided the perfect backdrop for many TV programmes beloved by our nation over the years. Similarly, the Ness Botanic Gardens is a beautiful example of not just stunning grounds, but a testament to the keen horticultural research, passion and subsequently, the introduction of exotic plants from far-flung corners by Arthur Kilpin Bulley.
Beautiful estates aside, Cheshire did not entirely escape the progress of the Industrial Revolution the waterways were as crucial as the roads and rails and so, the Anderton Boat lift came to life. Built in 1875 by Edwin Clark, the simple but effective system is truly a feat of engineering for its time. You can experience the action with a 30-minute voyage in a glass-covered boat, which will be raised 50 feet in the air.
Built at the end of the 19th century, the garden village of Port Sunlight was constructed as home for the workers at the soap factory, Lever Brothers (now known as Unilever), and was named after the companys most popular brand of cleaning agent, Sunlight. A visit to the Port Sunlight Museum allows you to dive into the history and experience everyday life in this fascinating Edwardian village.
Having recently celebrated its 90th anniversary since opening as a charity (George Mottershead rescued small lizards and snakes that were unwittingly transported in exotic blooms sent to his father) and becoming globally renowned for its dedication to conservation and scientific research, Chester Zoo is home to 35,000 animals over 128 acres of zoological gardens, and definitely not an excursion to be missed.
